There’s a ferry service from Naples to Positano, making it easy to travel between the central city and cliffside village. During the winter months from the end of October to the beginning of April, there is only one crossing each day. During the summer, however, the trips are more frequent.
Taking the ferry is an excellent option because you’ll avoid traffic the intense traffic that clogs the roads during high season from April to October. The crossing takes an hour and a half and covers about 20 nautical miles.

During the summer months, ferry companies offer direct trips from Naples to Positano, with fairly frequent departures from morning to afternoon.

The crossing takes about an hour and a half. You can organize an entire day trip in Positano departing from Naples. If you want, you can also buy combined ferry tickets that allow you to visit Amalfi and Positano in a single day, departing Naples.

Molo Beverello, located in the heart of the city of Naples, is the departure point for hydrofoils to Positano and other towns along the Gulf of Naples, such as Capri, Ischia, Procida and Sorrento. It’s located in Piazza Municipio, just below the Maschio Angioino castle, and is easily accessible from both the airport and train station by taking public transport or a taxi.
From Naples Capodichino Airport:
Alibus bus: This bus departs from the airport arrivals area and goes to the port, making only one intermediate stop in Piazza Garibaldi (central train station). The trip takes about 30 minutes and the ticket costs 5 euros. You can buy your ticket in advance or on board the bus.
Taxi: Official taxis are available at the airport exit. The fixed rate to the port is about 21 euros. If you share the ride with other passengers, the cost can drop to 5 euros per person.
From Naples Piazza Garibaldi train station:
Metro Line 1: From the lower level of the station, take the subway in the direction of Piscinola and get off at the Municipio stop. Go to the Porto exit and the ticket office is nearby after you exit. The subway trip takes about 5 minutes.
Taxi: The fixed rate from the station to the port is about 15 euros. Use the official taxi stand and don’t accepting unofficial rides from people who offer inside the station.

If you’re traveling by car, the port offers several parking options. Among the closest:

Tirreni Parking: Located near Calata Porta di Massa, also bookable online.
Molo Beverello has recently been remodeled and now offers comfortable air-conditioned waiting rooms, snack bars, newsstands and everything you need for a pleasant wait.

If the direct Naples-Positano routes aren’t available or don’t fit your schedule, there are other options for getting to Positano:
Naples - Sorrento ferry + bus/taxi:
Take a ferry or hydrofoil from Naples to Sorrento. The trip takes about 40 minutes.
From Sorrento, continue by bus (SITA line) or take a taxi to Positano. The trip takes about an hour.
Bus or train + bus:
From Naples Central train station (Napoli Centrale), take the Circumvesuviana train or the Campania Express to Sorrento. The trip takes about an hour.
From Sorrento, take the SITA bus to Positano.
Car rental or private transfer service:
Renting a car is a flexible option, but you should consider the difficulty of parking in Positano.
A private transfer is a quick and convenient solution. It’s the most option if you’re arriving at Naples airport and want to get to Positano without too much stress.
Arrival in Salerno + hydrofoil
If you’re coming by train, consider arriving in Salerno and taking a ferry from there to Positano. The cruise along the coast is very scenic and the travel time is short.
Another option from Salerno is to take a bus to Amalfi and then another bus from there to Positano.
Private boat transfer:
You can also book a private boat transfer from Naples to Positano, docking directly at your hotel if it has a private dock. This is very convenient although it is significantly more costly than the other options, with prices starting at around 1,000 euros per boat.

For those arriving in Naples and need to reach the Amalfi Coast, the two most popular and recommended options are a private car with driver and a ferry. Let's look at the pros and cons of these two solutions.
Both solutions offer a scenic view, one by land and the other by sea.
Car:
Your driver will be waiting for you directly at the arrivals hall so you don’t have to wait in any lines.
The trip is a direct ride to the Amalfi Coast. The trip takes about an hour and a half, if there‘s no traffic.
The time may vary depending on traffic.
Your car may not be able to take you directly to your hotel, because many hotels are located in areas not accessible to cars.
A private transfer costs about 160 euros, so it’s more costly than a ferry ticket, which costs about 65 euros for two tickets.

From the airport or the station you need to get to the Naples pier Molo Beverello. This is where hydrofoils depart for the Amalfi Coast.
The average trip takes about the same amount of time as the car (about an hour and a half), but with the ferry there’s no traffic.
Ferry runs may be cancelled in the event of bad weather or rough seas. The Port of Positano has only one dock and is very exposed to the wind.
The landing point in Positano is at Spiaggia Grande, the main beach. Although it’s close to the most famous hotels, we recommend you check how many steps there are between the beach and your hotel and if necessary use the porter service to transport your luggage.
